As someone who likes to plan ahead for seasonal sewing, I like to take a look at ready-to-wear runway shows for the upcoming season several months in advance. But before I do anything else, I consult Pantone and their seasonal color palette.

previousI have mixed feelings about Pantone’s color picks. Their last three “Color of the Year” choices have not been great ones, in my opinion. They’ve been bright, almost gaudy. Colors that have not been easy to wear for many people.

marsalaThis year, Pantone went with a different pick, a variation on burgundy/wine that is dark and muddy. It’s called Marsala, and I was frankly underwhelmed with how it was included in Spring Ready to Wear collections.

Now, we’re looking forward to fall, and a different palette, and this time it’s one that is more compatible with Marsala, and very suitable to the fall season.

From left to right: Dried Herb, Desert Sage, Stormy Weather, Oak Buff, Marsala, Biscay Bay, Reflecting Pool, Cadmium Orange, Cashmere Rose, Amethyst Orchid

Marsala seems more at home with this palette. I’ve seen it combined beautifully with some of these colors, as well as a pumpkin-ish orange (darker than Cadmium).

The other big color story of the season is Reflecting Pool, or, as I like to call it, Inky Blue. You’ll be seeing a lot of this color in the fall collections.
